Dissecting our mechanical nature: The Default Mode Network
As we embark on spiritual evolution and elevate our consciousness, we cannot help but notice our mechanical nature. This machine-like mechanism within us runs our old, outdated “operating system” and its subsequent programs (I will use computer terms to help the reader understand). It includes our learned toxic behaviours, toxic thought patterns, our narratives/scripts we run on repeat, imprinting past traumas on present and future manifestations. For those who have dived into the 4th way, we see how Gurdjieff says, “Man is a machine,” because as we gain awareness, we see we do indeed have machine-like, mechanical tendencies…
This is where we begin to understand our “Default Mode Network,” and how we balance our states of consciousness and Being with the understanding of our underlying mechanical nature. We become aware of this part of ourselves, understand what it does, and we find ways to override and soften its mechanisms so we can evolve ourselves further.
So, what is our “Default Mode Network?”
“The default mode network (DMN) is an interconnected group of brain regions that activates when a person is not focused on the outside world, handling internal, self-directed mental processes. First coined by Marcus Raichle in 2001, it is often called the brain's "idle mode" or internal narrative center.”
Key Brain Regions
- Medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC): Handles self-reflection, personal identity, and the internal narrator.
- Posterior Cingulate Cortex (PCC) & Precuneus: Acts as a central hub and "film editor" for replaying memories and imagining future events.
- Angular Gyrus & Inferior Parietal Lobule: Process autobiographical facts, language, and social cognition.
Primary Functions
- Daydreaming and Mind-Wandering: Active when you drift into thoughts without a specific external goal.
- Autobiographical Memory and Planning: Links past experiences to future intentions and "mental time travel".
- Social Cognition ("Social Radar"): Helps you contemplate other people's perspectives, thoughts, and feelings.
- Creativity: Allows free-form associations that feed creative problem-solving.
Mental Health and Pathology
An overactive or dysregulated DMN is tied to persistent rumination and mental health loops:
- Depression & Anxiety: Excessive negative self-talk and rumination over past or future events.
- ADHD: Interference with task-positive attention networks.
- PTSD & Schizophrenia: Intrusive flashbacks or disrupted reality-testing.
- Alzheimer's Disease: Often shows early disruption or altered functional connectivity within these regions.
So as we can see, the default mode network isn’t entirely inherently negative. Nonetheless, it can perpetuate the repeating negative narratives, scripts and thought patterns we have imprinted on ourselves, which can inhibit further evolution if not addressed.
Consider the medial prefrontal cortex (MPC) and the posterior cingulate cortex/precuneus (PCC/P) aspects of the default mode network (DMN). For the MPC, we have self-reflection, personal identity, and internal narration. For the PCC/P we have a central hub and film editor for replaying memories and imagining future events.
These two aspects of the DMN are what replay the toxic narratives, thought patterns, scripts, actions and habits we constantly repeat mechanically that we are trying to override in our spiritual evolution.
Now, of course, in our spiritual evolution we understand the brain is a receiver of consciousness. But if our receiver has poor routing in its circuitry, it cannot bring forth the true potential of the consciousness it transmits.
Daydreaming and mind wandering can be helpful in creative thinking, but one thing a lot of us can experience in our evolution is losing grip on our imagination. Our imagination is very important and healthy for us when we are neutral observers of it and utilize it properly. When it runs wild, it can start to control us and throw us out of balance.
Autobiographical memory and planning link past experiences to future intentions. This is the culprit behind us repeating the toxic narratives, thought patterns, scripts, and actions we run through in a machine-like fashion. If you have looked into the 4th way, here is the physical, scientific proof for Gurdjieff’s “machine man,” and why most of us, in one way or another, fall prey to this part of ourselves. We imprint our past traumas on present and future events, using our mental faculties to project a distorted, untrue version of the past onto current reality and keep us trapped in a cycle we need to break.
Individuals with Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, PTSD and Schizophrenia have a hyperactive default mode network, while those with Alzheimer's and dementia have an underactive one. Of course, I know many of you reading this aren’t exactly neurotypical (lol), so this brings me to the next section…
How do we “Toggle off” and soften the default mode network's influence on our state of being?
First and foremost, keep our awareness in the present. Sure, easier said than done, I’ll give you that. Many useful methods and tools are available to help with this. Ultimately,, it will be what works for YOU, and feel free to tweak these to your liking.
I'll spare you the explanation on meditation because, if you’re reading this, you already know its benefit for helping you understand the present moment. If you haven’t started a daily meditation practice, I highly recommend you do, and you will see how it truly facilitates this understanding.
Mindful breathing and mindful walking are two pragmatic practices that can help keep you in the present. Since we all breathe and walk, these are the least disruptive to your routine.
Mindful breathing means focusing on your breath, which brings you to the Now. The place where you override the codes is in the Now. Feel the air enter your nostrils, how cool it feels, and your belly expand with each breath in and contract with each breath out. Simple as that. When you draw attention to your breath, which is always happening, you’ll notice the narratives and scripts drift away, allowing you to be present in the now.
Combine that with mindful walking, which is merely the practice of just walking properly. You’d be surprised how many people don’t walk properly. Most walk somewhat hunched over, overusing their hamstrings in their stride, which is a big reason so many have back and knee problems. Stand up straight, shoulder blades back and depressed, contract lower body muscles and use your GLUTES and CORE as the primary drivers for your stride. When you walk this way, it takes on a new feel you may not have experienced, and pair that with mindful breathing, and you have a surefire ticket into present awareness.
Another way to soften the DMN is spending time in nature. Nature consistently shifts us into the present as we immerse ourselves in its beauty and glory. Aim to spend at least 4 hours a week outside, as this will help as well.
Regulating our nervous system helps turn our DMN into a constructive planning studio instead of a rumination station. Meditation and nature help regulate the nervous system, but there are other methods as well…
Exercise. Whatever you choose helps regulate the nervous system and create new neural pathways that let you toggle your DMN off when needed.
Engaging ourselves in the task-positive network also helps toggle off the DMN. For those of you with ADHD, a great method to throw yourself into your task positive network is making a boring task “a game.” Me being AuADHD myself, I find this helps both aspects of my non-neurotypical nature. A game is structured for my autistic side, and it's fun for my ADHD side. So throwing yourself into the task-positive network can help, too.
Allowing healthy unstructured boredom paradoxically toggles off the DMN. Drowning yourself in podcasts, scrolling, and audiobooks starves the DMN of the downtime it needs to organize files and process identity, leading to high reactivity when silence finally hits. Make sure this is strategically planned, not something you do all the time.
Last but not least, the hacker cheat code for toggling off the DMN…
Psychedelics and entheogenic plants.
Tryptamine and Phenylethylamine psychedelics have the ability to toggle off the DMN for extended periods of time, giving you a glimpse of the framework for a higher state of consciousness. However, use these medicines with caution and respect, because they quite literally open you up to EVERYTHING, both positive and negative. If you do decide to use these, approach it with that understanding. Do what you need to do to protect your energy and space in the process.
With all of this in mind, we now know that these narratives and scripts we run about ourselves are ingrained in our makeup of who we are. This is why we sometimes struggle to override the “subsequent programs” our “operating system” has created in us, causing us to fall prey to our machine-like nature. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t toggle these off and soften the influence our default mode network has on our state of mind and being.
I hope this brings you greater awareness of yourself. Know that you can overcome the old narratives and patterns YOU have placed upon YOU, and while it takes practice, it isn’t as complicated as we once thought.
Until next time, everyone.
